What is the midlife identity breakup?

The midlife identity breakup. This is the moment when you realize that the person you have been, the roles, the patterns, the expectations: they no longer fit with who you’re becoming. It is not a crisis; it is a transition, but it feels like a breakup with an entire identity shift.

Jennifer Froemel

Like any breakup, your identity transition in midlife can come with grief, confusion, liberation, freedom, clarity, and a whole lot of: “Who am I now?”

You are changing from the person you were for a long time into a newer, different version of yourself. As life changes, so do you, and during midlife, changes become large and real enough that you have the chance to see them more clearly.

The thing is that identity shifts don’t just come out of nowhere. Midlife brings a perfect storm of change: hormonal shifts, changing roles like children growing, caregiving decreasing, your career changes, and your relationship transitions. Maybe you have deepened your self-awareness … And the realization that, well, time is precious.

Jennifer Froemel

It can be daunting, but it represents a powerful and wonderful shift into a new chapter in your life.

Signs of an identity breakup and change

Depending on the person, your identity change in midlife will look different. However, there are some common signs that the transition is underway:

  • A feeling akin to letting go of an older version of yourself
  • Releasing roles you no longer want to do anymore
  • Questioning your long-held beliefs
  • Outgrowing relationships or habits
  • Feeling unfulfilled by things that used to matter
  • Feeling uncomfortable in places you used to enjoy

While the signs and sensations of the transition can be unpleasant, and they certainly are not always easy, they are not a tragedy at all. In fact, it is signalling a profound – and necessary – change in the progression of your life.

Ultimately, this moment isn’t a failure: it’s evolution. These are all signs that you are breaking up with your old version of yourself.

Move through identity transformation with less fear

There are five tips that Jennifer recommends when you want to move through your midlife identity transformation with less fear:

1 – Let yourself grieve: You are allowed to feel sad about the change.

2 – Stop forcing clarity: Identity clarity emerges gradually, not instantly.

3 – Reduce the noise: Midlife identity work requires regular, quiet space and time.

4 – Choose self over self-abandonment: Be loyal to yourself.

Choose [the] self over self-abandonment. Be loyal to yourself. Ask yourself daily, “What choice honors the woman [I am] becoming?

Jennifer Froemel

5 – Surround yourself with people who support your evolution: Some relationships in your life are tied to the version of you that you were in the past, and they may not carry over into the new identity that you are bringing to fruition. That’s okay.

Jennifer’s advice to listeners

You are more than ready and able to welcome in the woman who you are becoming!
